Solid hardware plagued by classic Chinese software issues.
I’ve been using this camera as a “dashcam” mounted on my helmet while riding my motorbike for a month now. It has quite a good image quality, and OK image stabilisation. The device itself is solid and works well for the most part.
But it has some severe problems mostly rooted in its software. To list a few:
-You’ll lose the SD Card cover door. It’s staying in place by faith alone. A strong breeze makes it fall off. The good news is, that Insta360 sells replacements. The bad news is, it cost £24 a piece including shipping…
-If you install the Insta360 app on your android phone, as soon as you turn on the camera, your phone will lose its internet connection. If you start the Insta360 app, it’ll act as a proxy and you’ll get your internet back but you’ll likely forget to do that. I just ended up deleting the app from my phone.
-The PC app they have is functional. Barely. But it lacks a lot of quality of life features when compared to GoPro’s app. It also doesn’t use GPU to do rendering, which means converting video take a long time even on beastly hardware.
-Bad firmware updates. When I bought this camera, the video files it’d generate were however long the recording was. Recently, they pushed a firmware update that changed this. Now the videos are chopped into 29-minute segments which makes them harder to work with.
The change logs claim this is due to “optimisation” but that didn’t make much sense to me. So I did some
digging. Turns out EU has a tax on cameras that can record videos longer than 30 minutes for whatever reason… Thank god I was able to roll back to the old version. Problem is, any future firmware updates a closed to me now.
Overall, unless you’ll use this camera for very simple use cases, I wouldn’t recommend it. Just spend a bit more and get a GoPro 8 Black. Sure it won’t have as good an image as One RS but you’ll have far fewer headaches.

Not Worth The Money
Having had this camera for around a month now I have tried all different set ups and gone to different places but the end result is always the same, not only does the camera overheat but it also only records upto 29 minutes before starting again. This is one of the worst cameras I have ever owned and would not recommend.

Good but has issues
The camera is very versatile & produces decent picture quality. The workflow involved is easy due to the very good app which accompanies it. However, why the desktop version does not include any of the “tricks” that the mobile app does is a complete mystery. So any complex tricks you want to pull off must be done on your phone, which can raise a number of problems when dealing with file sizes & data transfer rates, which start out good then quickly drop off to a snail pace most of the time (Samsung Galaxy S9+).
The camera is advertised as waterproof but I wouldn’t trust that claim. The 1st & only time I submerged the One RS the 4K lense fogged up. That wasn’t due to not attaching the case correctly because the fog was INSIDE the lense. I’ve not submerged it since.
Another thing to be wary of is the tiny memory/charging door. So small & very easily lost. I am careful but still lost mine. Here’s the important bit…Insta360 do not sell this part in their store & it is NOT available in the UK. They want $34 to replace the easiest to lose thing ever created!! And because you open that little door extremely frequently it’s probably going to get lost. Especially when you’re in the outdoors. I refused to pay that & use duct tape instead to cover the slot. Seems to me like either bad planning or a money making scam. You decide.
The 4K boost lense gives good picture quality but sometimes causes the camera to freeze, forcing a reset. Resetting removes all your saved settings. Saved settings also seem to get randomly wiped, so you need to check sharpness etc before shooting important things.
Image stabilisation is spot on. No complaints. Picture quality is impressive but easy to mess up with the large amount of menu options, some of which are not easy to find or interpret. Expect to watch a lot of instruction videos. The touch screen is too small but eventually gets the job done. All settings can be made using the app after connecting with the camera, which is fairly quick but not snappy.
Battery life is OK but not amazing. You get about an hour per battery depending on conditions & the mode you’re shooting in. The camera can be powered externally but that means removing that tiny $34 door.
When I first bought this camera I was impressed but the more I’ve used it the more little annoying things I’ve found. Like if you have normal sized fingers you need tweezers to get the micro SD card out. If you’re an action camera heavy user I’d recommend buying their X2 for 360 work but go for the GoPro for regular action camera work.
If you’re going to buy this action camera then go for the twin edition, which comes with the 4K & 360 lense. You save a very decent amount of money instead of buying the 360 mod separately. Plus the 360 mod is a lot of fun to use, especially with their great mobile app. The company do actually provide regular updates for the app & camera firmware.
Insta360 have tried to produce a camera for all occasions with the One RS. They nearly got it right but not quite. Jack of all trades with this one but master of none. If you’re just looking to use an action camera with no 360 option then I’d probably go with the GoPro. I initially warmed to Insta360 but that has kinda worn off now after 4 months of using this camera. I think the final straw for me was the $34 price tag for a piece of plastic the size of your fingernail that looks like it’s been designed to fail & get lost easily.

I am very happy with the camera.
At first I wanted to buy a GOPRO but I had problems with them and they charged me the money and never sent me the camera, horrible customer service, etc, etc.
I was looking at this Instan360 camera and it was the best thing that could have happened to me. I bought this camera and tested it on a trip to Egypt. I am in love with this camera. It is the best action camera without any doubt. The quality is exceptional and the modular system is a great advance in this type of cameras. You can put the 360 module and have several cameras in one.
If you are looking for an action camera and have doubts, think no more, this is the best.

Ware gut, Lieferung Mist

more affordable than go pro but slightly inferior sound and picture quality
It really gets close to the Go pro (I have used all go pros from 3-10 so far). Go pro has still a battery overheat problem when used indoors for too long but I find the pictures done by the go pro nicer and especially the sound of the go pro better (I use it for youtube). The Insta 360 has a really cool modular built-up. The battery solution is definitely better than for the go pro. The prize is lower which is nice. I currently use it as a backup camera, just in case.

Wow, what a great system
£271 at time of review Insta360 ONE RS 4K
I was going to purchase the complete “Insta360 ONE RS 1-Inch Leica 360” for £812, but instead went for the upgrade at £660 then purchased this “Insta360 ONE RS 4K Edition Get-Set Kit” for £271, which cost £119 more than the stand alone “Insta360 ONE RS 1-Inch Leica 360”, but this meant I got the 4K lens, mounting case, battery pack, selfie stick plus 64G SD card.
If you’re interested in 360 upgrade check it here… Insta360 ONE RS 1-Inch Leica 360

I’ve used the camera mostly with the large 1 inch sensor 360 lens, but this weekend I finally got to take it out for a bike ride in it’s action camera set up. I recorded 4 x 30 min clips whilst on a bike ride using the 4K camera with the landscape battery pack and I didn’t have any issues, so whether this is down to the fast micro SD card I’m using, or the latest firmware update I don’t know, but I have had NO OVER HEATING ISSUES (unlike some other users). Also worth noting whilst filming I was using the camera standalone, it was not connected to my mobile phone.
I’ve not owned and action camera before so can’t compare it to a go pro etc, but as an add on to my 360º set up and the flexibility the RS system it was a non brainer for me. It’s not perfect though, the SD card & USB-C cover is a piece of rubber that will undoubtedly get lost at some point (plus is needs to be removed anyway if you use this with the vertical 1 inch 360 module, so that’s not a great bit of design, plus when you remove the lens or go from the twin pack the connections on the bottom of the lens & battery modules are left exposed! A major oversight, highly recommend you get these, only cost a tenner and worth every penny!

All in all I’m very happy with this set up and love the flexibility of the Insta 360 RS system
Hope my review was helpful
